What Members Thought

I'm not a big fan of science fiction but I loved this book. Gave me heart palpitations because I can think of nothing worse than being stuck alone on Mars, but Mark Watney's log entries were hilarious and had me laughing out loud several times.

This book just wasn't my thing. It felt like I was reading a script for MacGyver -- which, while interesting, isn't especially literary. I give Weir credit for certainly having a deep technical knowledge of NASA, Mars, and space exploration. But the prose was super simplistic (like a script), and my biggest thing was that I didn't feel any of the suspense other people claimed to feel. (Spoiler alert): I didn't for one second think that Weir would kill his character. It all felt contrived to me.

I was totally into this book and thought it was such a feat, plus it was a page-turner.
But I had one qualm: character development. Was Mark Watney really so different at the end of the book as at the beginning? And really, he didn't bring any books or music of his own?? I could suspend my disbelief about a guy being left on Mars, but not about that.

For a person that is not up to date on the technological advances in space exploration, the story was very convincing. I read another review where there was a complaint about Watney's nonchalance and informality when it came to logging his progress. I feel that this made the story more authentic. He's a human stuck on Mars, wanting to get off. At some point, some humor needs to get in there, and less for

Only thing that kept this from 5 stars was that the characters were pretty flat and stereotypical. But the storyline and the humor were fantastic, and the solid grounding in current scientific theory made for a fascinating read. This really only qualifies as Science Fiction because we haven't gone to Mars yet, but everything in here could have happened today.

This is really a fantastic book. I will definitely read this one again and highly recommend it!
