This is one of the most important children's books of our time -- a book about a girl who was assigned a male gender at birth and who is just trying to be herself. It's sweet, it's short, it's thoughtful, it's inspirational, and it's so necessary -- both for transkids to see themselves represented positively but also for those of us learning how to be better allies and better people. George is a girl and no one else can see it. But, she has a plan to let everyone else see who she really is - if she can just play Charlotte in the play at school.

So yeah, middle-grade books are where it's at! I cried more than once while reading this and I might have wanted to hug the principal after the play.

I'm just going to say that this doesn't get 5 stars only because some of the writing is stiff and the dialogue feels kind of forced to me. But, I think this is a really important book an ...more
