I'm beginning to really love Neil Gaiman. ...more

This is one of those reviews I've been putting off because I don't have much intelligent to say about this book. It's a fun, warm, and charming read -- a rather sweet take on the Norse gods and one young boy's interactions with them. ...more

reads very much like a fairy tale or myth with little to no depth to the characters, but a fun story nontheless.

I am always on the hunt for books that feature curious, clever, kind, brave boys. This book exactly satisfies. Odd is willing to take a group of forest animals in, they, in turn accept his help to defeat the frost giant that had taken over Asgaurd. The writing and pace are both gentle, leaving the reader interested in how they will get back home, without being subjected to too much peril or scariness. I borrowed this from my oldest child and read it during Dewey's Readathon and I found it quite charming. It was shorter than I expected at first, but it was quite appropriate for middle grade readers, and Gaiman is clearly very at home in the world of Nordic myth. I love his takes on Thor and Loki, but I also love that they are just supporting characters in this story.

Hmm...ironically the word that comes to mind is odd. It was an enjoyable story for children. Maybe its best described as an easy introduction to Norse mythology (although I thought I would have got more out of it if I was more familiar with the mythology)

A funny, charming Viking novella. Extra star for the audio book version--Neil is SO good at reading his own work. I especially liked his bear voice.
