A Short History of Nearly Everything is more than ten years old, so the science in it isn't all totally up-to-date at this point, but I still found it very enjoyable and learned a lot from reading it. Bill Bryson took on the daunting task of writing an engaging and friendly overview of the history of the universe and our attempts to understand it, all in one single book of not even 500 pages.

I can't really recommend this book because it's so out of date, and it isn't entertaining enough to make up for that. I spent a good part of the later part of the book thinking, "but now we know X. Or etc." It might be a good start for someone who hasn't really followed anything to do with science though.
