I knew from the first chapter that I would be desperately sad to finish this book, and I am. It is a gorgeous, thoughtful story with compelling characters and an emotional, satisfying conclusion -- and Paull did this all not with humans but with bees. Brilliant work.

Shelves: audiobook, 2015-read-harder

Ew. It could have been the fact I listened to this rather than read it, but I was thoroughly grossed out by this book. It didn't help that I usually listen to audiobooks while cooking...Twas hard to shake away the creepy ick factor of mouse urine, slime tongues, and antennae dismemberment. While I never had thoughts on bees before, I now think they are gross. Sorry, bees!

I'm so glad this book finally ended. It had a strong start and I wanted it to be better. The story tricked me into reading it way past the point where I usually know to cut my losses and ditch the book. I was almost done with it before I fully realized that there was no hope.
