Wow! My first McEwan and it did not disappoint. As I read I kept trying to figure out how someone could make a film of this story...and now I'm dying to see how they do it!
My one question though is...why did Marshall end up marrying Lola? I felt like he was taking advantage of her that day they met. Why would he later marry her? I'd love to hear others thoughts on this. ...more

I started reading this for a book club and threw it away after the first part because I didn't care for the explicit sexual content / language. I don't think of myself as being overly prudish, but when inappropriate language is used unnecessarily (it seemed incongruous and unrealistic), I lose respect for the author and his craft. Every once in a while I wake up and think to myself, "I could be a writer." Then you read a book and like this and think, "Silly girl. Now THIS is a writer." Beautifully written. Not a book you fly through, but one that you take your time with and savor. I only wish I could write this well some day.

My first exposure to McEwan's writing. I've always heard others ooh and ahh when Ian McEwan is mentioned ... I liked it, but I don't feel the urge to gush about it.

I loved loved loved this book. But the ending? It killed me. I'd be interested to see what other people thought of it.
