This is the first time I've ever given a book one star...I actually feel sort of bad doing it. Despite it being well-written, it's pacing was terrible, and I really had to fight to get through it. And then the ending -- oh the ending. After trudging through nearly 600 pages, the ending was about the most unsatisying I have ever read. I literally threw the book against the wall when I was done. A slow read, with unidentified jumps between characters and narrators and time periods that made it hard to keep up with the main narrative sometimes. I feel like I would have adored this book if we had read it for history in high school.
I didn't know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. An unlikely love story between an Occupier and one of the Occupied during WWII...but then again...maybe not so unlikely. A good read.

A wonderful book which combines romance and love with the brutalities and hardship of war.
A good book, although it was sometimes very slow, and I hated the ending.
