This book has a promising dystopian premise that, unfortunately, falls way short of the mark. Excellent. I read a lot -- A LOT -- of dystopian fiction. Because I read so much of it, I don't enjoy a lot of it. Been there, done that. This was the first one in a while that completely bowled me over. Tris is Katniss-esque, but I like her a whole lot more than Katniss. She's not impulsive, she's intelligent, and she's definitely...dauntless. It's the latest in the trend of dystopian novels and it's part of a trilogy. Two strikes against it already but this one is actually pretty entertaining. In Roth's novel, society is broken up into five factions: dauntless, abnegation, amity, erudite and candor. At 16, all individuals have to choose which faction to live and work with, leaving their family of origin behind if they choose a different faction. My favorite book since the Hunger Games! Finally a female character that has back bone. Keeping my fingers crossed that the squeal avoids a love triangle, I am so over those in teen dystopias.

I can see why it has been compared to The Hunger Games. You are forced to either love or hate most of the characters...there's no in between.
