It probably would have taken me the rest of my life to finish this book if I didn't have a library deadline hanging over my head. It's not that the story isn't interesting, and Bissinger is a good writer, but it's told in a very journalistic way that keeps the characters at arm's length so that you never really feel invested in them or even get to know them well enough to remember which one is which. I've never seen the show, although I'm told it's pretty good. But small town high school football is something that kind of intrigues me. So, I obviously only picked this up because of my love of Friday Night Lights the show, and I only got into FNL the show because so many people insisted that it didn't matter that I didn't care about football. But it's still really fascinating. I admire Bissinger's tone... observing everything that's totally effed-up in the town ...more

An in depth look at a small town in Texas where life revolves around football. Parts of this book were interesting, but there was an awful lot of the book that wasn't about football. I didn't really get a sense of the town's passion for football, and the author chose some odd placements to explain a character's back story. Not a huge fan of the book. And they completely skipped over the part where Landry kills a guy and then hides the body... ...more

I didn't actively dislike this book, but I had a really hard time imagining the lives of the people in it. The racial tension (or rather, situation, there didn't seem to be much tension, people just existed in their divided world, for the most part) was depressing and the lack of ... something.

I loved the movie, but the characters in the book weren't nearly as likeable.
