I read this book as a young woman fresh out of college. I re-read it almost a decade later, with fresh eyes, and found it all the more meaningful. This time, I listened to the audiobook narrated by Peter Francis James. I would definitely recommend the audiobook. James brings the book alive with intensity.

Maybe I would have liked this book better if I had not recently read Native Son. I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters except for Mary. Even the situations the protagonist found himself in I had a hard time connecting with. It wasn't a bad a read, but just forgetable. ...more
