I meant to finish this book in May of 2014. I'm kind of glad I dragged it out though, as it's an expansive book, taking place throughout the 20th century. No need to rush; enjoy every beautiful, painful, heartbreaking moment.

A sprawling work, even compelling, in its own unique way... much like the Mexican border city around which it revolves - chaotic and unjust, but still functionable, albeit with the greasing provided by capitalism.
The reader wades from modern academic dribble to compelling glimples of an enlisted man's experience on the Eastern front. In between, the blood, guts, gore and sex, the narrator draws you into a mystery - multiple mysteries in fact - all with unsatifying resolution.
