Ugh, no. Why do people keep publishing stuff that is SO. DAMN. LONG. Honestly, just because you can string some sentences together in a pleasing way doesn't mean you are obligated to write EVERY sentence that ever occurred to you-- are there no editors left willing to cut unnecessary chaff?

I wanted to like this book so much. It's a literary mystery, something I love, and the pieces of the story that dealt with radical forms of idealism, a teenager grieving his dad, and the corporate takeover of family-run fireworks businesses (who knew I'd be so interested in fireworks, which I generally cannot stand) were all compelling an kept me going. A bit heavy-handed on the King Lear allusions. Also, Vassar has never had sororities. Otherwise, a solid book that had me feel as if I were living through late-70s NYC. A great homage to the city and its diverse characters.
