This book was excellent, but well aware of its excellence. I really got the feeling, as I was reading, that Capote knew that this was going to be his masterpiece, something that he would always be known for. I don't think that hurt the book, however; I think it lent even more weight to the vanity and self-importance of the murderers. The writing style is heavily descriptive, and very matter-of-fact. I'm not into crime books at all so it surprising that I liked it as much as I did. It's been over 15 years since I read it but certain parts are still clear in my mind.
