I think I've just read my first Steampunk novel!

Although I gave this book the same number of stars that Krystl did, I think I enjoyed it more than she did. I thought it worked well as a full-cast recording, especially with the characters who had distinct accents, like Vlad. And since we're talking about characters, I liked most of them, and I especially liked that they didn't fit into neat boxes. The rich kid who "stole" the main character's promotion ends up being a pretty nice guy. The notorio

Young Matt Cruse, cabin boy on the Aurora, has always dreamed of flying an airship. He was born on one and he feels more at home in the sky than anywhere else. When he helps rescue a dying man from a balloon over the ocean, Matt sets into motion a series of events that will change his life forever.

I can see why other reviewers compared this to Leviathan because, well, it has an airship in it. However it is nothing at all like Leviathan. What a fantastic adventure! I loved every bit of it, from the science to the world building to the banter and more. Kate and Matt are such fun, interesting characters who felt so real. Can't wait to get the sequel started. ...more

I loved the way the author's writing style while a little technical in places, never read that way, it's almost poetic instead as Oppel describes the workings of the airships. This book reminded me of all those old classic swashbuckling movies. Finally, the element of hunting for the mysterious white creatures in the sky adds a kind of "big-game hunt" element of adventure to the tale. First in a series. ...more
