Unbelievably overdue in reading Beverly Jenkins - met her at Book Riot Live and was determined to rectify that.
One thing I love about really great romance novels (besides the romance) is when the author widens the scope of the plot so the tension is not just due to "I hate you. I love you. God damn it I can't stop thinking about your hair" (I'm paraphrasing SB Sarah) but due to race or class or financial differences in the couple. In the case of Forbidden, Jenkins uses the practice of passing a ...more

This is my second Jenkins book, and maybe it should be my last. (I DNF'ed the first one, too.) This writing is just so plodding. There's no life in these words!!
Regan laced her thin arms around Eddy’s waist and pressed herself close. She whispered through her tears. “Please don’t leave Aunt Eddy. Please.”...more
Eddy felt awful.
“Regan, stop that sniveling and go help your sister.”
“Yes, Mama.”
Eddy caressed her cheek in good-bye and Regan left the room.
“You didn’t have to be so mean, Corinne.”

This would have been easily a 4 star read except for the weak writing (show not tell! show not tell!!) and the crazypants over-dramatic ending. However, it's still a very solid base storyline, a guy deciding whether or not to give up his comfortable White social position for the woman he loves, and the author also used some very interesting recent archaeological research on Black people in the Wild West to flesh out the story. So still decidedly worth your time!

1870 Nevada: Rhine is passing as white when he meets Eddy, who is determined to make it to San Francisco to make something of her life. Romance ensues. Solid novel--I really liked the pacing, where it didn't seem like they were in love in a week, I really liked the history, and the town was a great community. I liked Rhine and Eddy, both very steady, smart characters, but I didn't get much passion from them. I'd like to read more by the author, though. I was fascinated that Rhine's job was inspi

This was the perfect book to read when I was sick. Who knew I would get hooked on romance? Beverly Jenkins does it again, managing to meld fascinating black history in a rugged Old West setting with a romantic encounter. She specializes in not only creating a romantic love, but also a strong sexual energy, and all without devolving into sexist crap. Her main female character is strong, determined, and an entrepreneur. The male lead is dashing, powerful, and kind-hearted. Honestly, I felt like I

Meh. Romance. They just... All seem the same to me, even ones that are obviously well written like this one. It did have some interesting things to say about politics. Nothing much has changed in that regard for a very long time, it seems. Shame on us.
Otherwise, this was just a romance to me. Not really my cuppa but I read it to check off a box for the 2019 Read Harder challenge.

Broadening my horizons with some genre reading. This wasn't exactly my thing, but I can see why readers might like it. The stakes aren't too high, the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad, although the heroine struggles she does so prettily. It goes down easy.
