I feel like I felt the first time I read Octavia Butler, I feel pulled apart and put back together with a new understanding of the world. I have been taken to the future, to another world that is much like my own and shown that we can't escape our pain and wars if we can't see past our differences. I had no idea this was a novella until I'd finished 😄🤦‍♀️ as the story burnt through plot points, I simultaneously marvelled at the author's gumption and worried how the story would be sustained.

I loved the melding of ancient culture and futuristic sci fi elements. I have book two on hold and look forward to digging in. ...more

First of all, let me make it clear that, novelty aside, this is a very good book. The protagonist is interesting and fleshed out. The world-building is rich and yet not completely exposed - it's like the anti-Tolkien in that you know there is so much more that Okorafor knows about this world, that she hasn't revealed to us yet. In fact, there's a lot about Binti herself that has only been hinted at. The prose is beautiful and unobtrusive, and Robin Miles reads beautifully (as always).

Was not aware that this is a novella when I downloaded the audiobook, so it wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but it was still an interesting story. I would love to read more sci-fi that incorporates characters of different cultures and will definitely be seeking out more of Nnedi Okorafor's stuff. ...more
