These books are just so effective, no matter how much I've already read/seen about the civil rights movement, the combo of Nate Powell's black & white illustrations + John Lewis's frank narration is so moving. Especially interspersed with the scenes from Obama's inauguration, especially considering the current political climate...just! so! much! ...more

I loved the first two volumes and already thought this trilogy should be required reading before having laid hands on the third, but this was one of, if not the most powerful book, I have read this year. The third book in this trilogy hits the political side to the civil rights fight in the south, including the 1964 Democratic National Convention and ending with the Civil Rights Act of 1965. I feel that this should be required reading for all students.

What an incredible life John Lewis has lead, what courage and strength he showed. I fear we will need to be remind daily over the next couple of years of all fight, courage, strength and hope that Lewis and all the other civil rights activists showed.
