A difficult-to-read revisionist account of the 19th-century whaling industry that wasn't nearly as good as the reviewers claimed. I went in expecting a psychological thriller, a battle between two strong characters, and found an interesting enough plot splattered with gore, both human and animal.

Very compelling book, but at multiple times in this horrific story, I thought to myself, "The suicide rate must have been sky high during this period."

I almost bailed on this book a few times but, ultimately, I'm happy I stuck with it. The part of me that loved DEADWOOD enjoyed some parts of McGuire's story of whaling, murder, and survival. However, the part of me that is just *over* toxic masculinity was way less into it. I get that the physicality of a dirty body and extreme violence is one way to make a point about man's animal nature but... ehhhhh... it's no longer insightful (to me). There's a lot to like in this book, it just didn't land
