I started this book with a bad taste in my mouth. I'm very unhappy with Mr. Gaiman for what he did to Susan from the Narnia stories. But I decided I could give him another chance with this book.

Based on Kipling's The Jungle Book (which is coming up soon on my To Read list) it's the story of an orphan raised by ghosts instead of jungle animals. It got a bit bogged down for me about half way through but overall it was a fun read.

But here's the question that is really bugging me: What color car do

A great read -- both literary and entertaining. "The Graveyard Book" is Gaiman's take on Kipling's, "The Jungle Book," and he does Kipling proud. While Kipling's novel begins with the murder of Mowgli's family (and infant Mowgli's deposit by his mother into the jungle), Gaiman's protagonist -- later named "Bod," short for "Nobody" -- escapes a similar situation, when his family is brutally killed, and he toddles his way into the local graveyard. A fun premise-Gaiman's writing, which I think of as cynically whimsical, crosses over well for both children and adults. I was a bit let down by the last quarter of the book - it just lacked the punch that the first 3/4s had, but still - a very enjoyable read and a unique Newbery choice. ...more

This was a quick, enjoyable read. I'd recommend it to younger readers, especially kids who've read Harry Potter, and don't know what to move on to next. ...more
