Is it sacrilege to say that I preferred the movie to the book? Such is the magic of Shirley Temple. Or maybe the movie was just too much a part of my childhood for me to appreciate the book as an adult.
So I read this out loud to my four-year-old. I watched the 90s movie adaptation as a kid and loved it but this was my first time with the novel. We both thoroughly enjoyed the first half (there is a lot to love) but found the second half to be less engaging and more of a drag. Ultimately my daughter pulled the plug on this one about 7/8 through. I couldn't convince her to persist to see the conclusion unfold so this may be one we revisit in a few years.

This was the ultimate transportation book for me as a child. Why so many of us loved orphaned, abused and English children's books about sooty London...I'll never know.

again i am a bit sad for my own childhood that no parent/teacher/librarian friend recommended to me that i read any frances hodgson burnett books - so wonderful!
Reread. Comfort food for my out-of-place childhood brain, even as I recognize some issues that would concern the modern me.
Still a magical, beautiful story for all children who are noble in spirit, whatever their difficulties.
Another childhood favorite! One I read over and over again. I loved the Shirley Temple film version too.
