Oh, how I tried to like it. I just couldn't. I'll admit, I didn't finish. I made it to the third CD out of 6 and it was too much. I have enough crazy in my life, I don't have time to read someone else's crazy gibberish.

This is one of those books that is going to be hard for me to review.
First off, I know it's an important book. Contrary to a review I read on the book, it is NOT rare for YA literature to tackle mental illness, but I've never seen it addressed in quite this way. Challenger Deep consists of two parallel story lines, one that takes place in the "real world" and one that takes place on a pirate ship. I wish I could like this book, having heard the author's heartfelt speech at the National Book Awards. It's important to bring to light the experience of mental illness. But this book didn't do that for me. It took me a long time to settle in to the book's structure -- real world vs. phantasmagoric ship.
