There are those books that you read that-- while imperfect—you still find yourself loving. You’ve been on a journey with the book, and it’s the sort of strange, crazy journey that when you try to describe to people you realize you sound like a moron trying to explain it. “American Gods” is one of those books. This was simultaneously the best vacation book ever (in that it was completely engrossing and I never wanted to stop reading), and the worst (in that it was way too tense, I couldn't leave the world, and I was uptight all vacation). I much prefer the light hearted Anansi Boys, which I read first because I'm dumb.
Strangely, I've read three books in the past 6 months that I feel are directly indebted to this book. And I've only ever read the word susurrus in one other book in my whole entire life ...more
