Finally picked this book back up after reading snippets and stories here and there. I enjoyed how current and modern-feeling this book was, despite being written decades ago. Not my favorite collection of stories but worth picking up nonetheless.

3.5 stars. Each of these stories is so different in its structure, rhythm. I loved the experimentation with how to tell a story -- some read like a film script, some like a play dialogue, some like subconscious automatic writing, some like a traditional short story. Finished this collection of short stories that I started in 2018. Still not a huge fan of short story format, but I appreciated the vivid writing and distinct voices of the narrators in each story.

These stories work on so many levels you could unpack them for a long time. They are moving, and beautiful, often quiet in their way, but exploring big topics of relationships and the experience of being a black woman in the 1960s. Somehow it is all still so relevant today and I can see so many parallels. I think I will visit some or all of these stories again and again.
