This book contained a lot of great observations about friendship, marriage and parenting. The suspense around what the unpleasant incident at the BBQ was proved effective (in the sense that it spurred my reading on) but I'm still undecided as to whether keeping the reader guessing for so long was gimmicky and/or distracting. Certainly I enjoyed the book more post reveal. I found the friendship between Erika and Clementine and all its complexities particularly interesting. 3 and a half stars.Ms M ...more

3.5 stars. Not nearly as good as Big Little Lies, but still well crafted and worth the time investment.

(3.5, really)

I didn't read Big Little Lies (but watched the show) and after reading this book, I think I found what my issue is with the author - the lead-up to the "big reveal" is REALLY good, compelling and nicely drawn out. However, the actual reveal of what happened is super boring and a little anti-climactic. But the draw of that big reveal made for a nice read despite my disappointment.

Not my favorite of Moriarty's books, and it definitely helped that I read some reviews that told me that The Thing would not be revealed until halfway through the book. I enjoy a character-driven story and this is definitely that. I think it was just the right number of characters to share the story between, too.

Book Club will definitely have some things to talk about!!
