A strange thing happened with this book. I started it way back in March, trying to get it finished before the Canada Reads debates. Then life got busy, I was almost finished (75 pages or so from the end), and then the debates happened, and then....I never went back to it. Until tonight. Why? Can't quite articulate that, because I did love the book, even though parts of it were unclear, opaque, definitely challenging. It took a bit to get into this but once we got outside of Birdie's head, there was enough context to understand what was going on. It wasn't a problem to understand her then. It's an emotionally painful story but it never gets too intense. Birdie uses her faith and ancestry to try and come to terms with her life and her family and friends deal with their own.
