It has a positive message -- "be positive" -- but I think the stereotypes of the fifth-graders who "write" the book are forced and the message is heavy-handed. I also do not believe, or teach, that "everything happens for a reason." HOWEVER, it is probably a worthwhile book to use with fifth graders to stimulate discussion of getting along, working together, and being kind.

Lots to think about: everyone has a backstory; accidents can be accidents and have more layers than an onion; fault or blame Is a tricky thing and often unproductive; who you are is not necessarily who people think you are; kindness matters...as does respect. C'mon Claire, read it quickly so we can discuss!!!!
