Inspired by folktales of China, this is the story of a young Chinese girl named Minli. She lives in a poor village underneath a stark mountain and every day her mother expresses her discontent. So Minli sets out to find the Old Man of the Moon to ask him how to change their fortune. What follows is the story of her journey. Along the way she meets many different characters and hears many different stories. The book reads like a fable, which is fitting because it contains so many stories. The end

Mock Newbery read. I wasn't very enthusiastic about starting this one...morality tales, blah blah, talking animals, blah blah. I'm not big into folk tales of any sort. But I could tell that the writing was good, even if I wasn't into the story, and I had to keep going anyway. Not far in, probably about the time of the first really funny line, I found myself completely immersed in the magic of the story. The entire thing is just beautiful - the colors of the book, the fonts, the illustrations, th

This has been on my to-read list based on strong recs from friends for literally years, but it did not disappoint when I finally got around to it! I listened to the audiobook on a trip and it's a good one for that; it kept me engaged but also the structure makes it easy to start and stop. (I've also heard it recommended for read-alouds for that reason.) It's so smartly done and simultaneously a surprising read but also very logical? Like there are no loose ends here. Also just lovely and fun. So

So, I've decided to start counting the books that I read with Jefferson at bedtime. Partially because he's getting old enough that we get to read "real" books that deserve to be counted, and partly as a means of keeping track of them. I thought briefly about getting a new book journal just for Jefferson, but at this point it would be all me keeping it up, and let's face it, I barely keep up with this. Maybe in a few years I'll encourage him to start his own book journal. RIght now it would be to

Grace Lin is such an incredible author. Without losing detail and vivid descriptions she is able to get her stories moving quickly. I loved the folk tales that wove Minli's journey together.

I know I classified this as fantasy (and so did the library), but I say it's more folklore-y. Totally deserving of a Newberry.

I'm a big fan of well-written children's books and this one definitely does not disappoint. This one reminded me a lot of The Alchemist which is one of my favorite books.

This is a beautiful book of a young girl's journey to find happiness and fortune for her family. It is a gentle, magical read, a great read aloud choice for younger children too. I enjoyed the story layers and the sweet generosity of Minli. The pictures and illustrations add to the magic of the whole book.

Very sweet children's book. The back matter was very nice as well. This would have been better in a print book than on my kindle- but the images worked even without color. Lovely message, and solid story-telling.

Loved reading this with my 5 and 6 year old kids. I am going to get a copy so they can re-read it when they are older, such great themes and I was charmed by the Chinese fables Lin integrates. It's delightful!
