Like Persepolis, this book brings the reality of living within a terrorist regime down to the personal level, making ideas that feel vague and overwhelming in the news digestible. Despite everything we've heard about the Taliban, we have very little insight into the real effect they've had on Afghanistan. This book, by following the lives of two boys -- one who escaped Afghanistan, and one who didn't -- brings reality to something that, until now, has felt mainly conceptual.

Since Goodreads is giving me problems right now, I"m not going to bother with much of a review that I will lose. So I'll just say that is is one of the more depressing books I've ever read and this was not a good time for me to read it.

There are scenes from this book that still haunt me. It has the makings of an epic, beautiful story. It's too bad the plot becomes too convenient and cute and the ending is so unsatisfying.
