A really fun and unique memoir/travel memoir about Schuman's love (possibly hate) at times relationship with German and Germans, starting with her first exposure to Kafka via a boyfriend in high school (and yes, we all know Kafka wasn't an actual German). Schuman is approximately 2 years older than me, so we experienced the same Germany in the mid-1990s. And we had very different experiences, to say the least. She has some interesting stories. ...more

Things I loved about this book: German words integrated into the story, perceptive insights about the country and also struggles with learning and refining her German skills.

I also studied abroad in Germany and this book brought lots of memories from my time there flooding back, as well as, some of linguistic trials and tribulations. The language is still fascinating to me and I love some of the concepts that can be conveyed in a single giant compound word, but other grammatical structures rema
