What Members Thought

This was super fun and sweet! I love a well-meaning garbage boy and Monty is juust the ticket. Plus: super smart lady rebelling against society! Plus: dapper biracial gentleman forcing his garbage boyfriend to check his privilege! Plus: pirates!

I read this one for BookRiot's challenge as a book whose cover I hate (still do!). Happily, the words inside are much better than the terrible cover. Monty is such an endearing character, even when he's acting like a rake, and this book explores what it might have been like to be a gay teen in Europe at this time (frowned upon, to say the least). This was a fun romp with good characterization. I think I probably would have enjoyed it more had I read it about 15 years ago. A completely charming YA adventure/love story featuring Monty, a lovable reprobate and the boy he adores, along with Monty's sister, who is to be delivered to a finishing school in Marseille. The trio are off on their Grand Tour before the realities of adult life end all their fun. Adventures and misadventures, including a theft at Versailles, an attack by highwaymen, and pirates, come up in quick order and by the end our hero has found his soul.
