Not bad. I like imagining all the feathered Incan dragons. Again felt like there wasn't an actual, overarching plot, though. They just stumbled around a bit, getting into a few scrapes and then getting out again, and then the book was over.

I did learn that an "invert" is what one might call a gay dude back in the day, so that was . . . educational.

A definite return to form after the last book in this series. Though for perhaps the first time it was the plot itself and not Temeraire that made me want to keep reading. As compared to the last book, this one was action packed - every time you turned around some new horror had befallen the crew. I loved Laurence in this one - it's tough for a human to shine around all these amazing dragon characters, but he is just so strong and principled, you can't help but love him. big old "meh" on this one. I basically half-listened to it on vacation while doing other things. I loved the first ones so much I couldn't quite abandon it, and it was basically soothing to have it going on long flights and airport waits. The next one looks more intriguing and then the series wraps up. I'll give it a bit of a pause. But the Australia and South America travelogue parts of this series are not my faves. ...more

Better than book 6 (Australia) which I hated the whole time I was reading it and get annoyed just thinking about now. This one has to do with the New World, and describes encounters between the British envoy (including Temeraire and Laurence, of course) and the Incan empire. I really liked the ideas of the Incan society and its approach to dragons. Still not sure how they are ever going to get back to fighting the Napoleonic Wars, especially with how this book ends, but of course I'll keep readi ...more
