I really wanted to like this book, but it just didn't do much for me. It felt slow to start, picked up a bit in the middle, and then ended feeling muddled again. The characters were well-drawn and interesting and it's always refreshing to explore fantasy not set against the default European backdrop. A great storyline with engaging characters. I'm also thrilled to see an author of the global majority contributing such a well received addition to a genre that is so overwhelmingly white and male. That said, I had trouble with many aspects of the writing. I found the shifting first person narrator jarring and not particularly effective, especially since there was not much variation in each character's voice. Loved this one, and it was AMAZING on audio. Will happily recommend this all sort of people.
