What Members Thought

The writing in this book had a meditative feel of both focus and reflection. The way the author responded to the loss of her father fueled the book, but wasn't weighed down by it. I was left feeling uplifted.

Not my cup of tea. Slogging through all of the commentary on T.H. White's experiences as a falconer was painful.

Writing is truly lovely and I really enjoyed the parts on falconry/training her hawk. But it doesn't rise above my general dislike of the memoir format (I felt the usual disconnect between the actual feelings of the author and her trying to recapture them later in words). And I've long realized that for a former English major I'm generally not interested in literary criticism so the TH White portions bored me a bit. I can easily see why others love this book though.

I think I would have enjoyed this a lot more without the tedious analysis of TH White's life in every single chapter chapter. It felt really awkward and unnecessary, like a tacked on attempt at making the work more academic? Literary? It felt like reading a memoir with a graduate level dissertation crammed in there.

Beautifully written. Very moving.
