A great children book with awesome illustrations. Beautiful and welcoming. I came across it when I was looking for a book for "Task #22: A children’s or middle grade book (not YA) that has won a diversity award since 2009 " of < a href ="https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... Harder Challenge. It has won many awards including 2019 Stonewall Book Award and also The prestigious award by British institution Waterstone.

Jessica Love created a masterpiece in Julian Is a Mermaid! ...the illustrations and story are radiantly warm with color, love, and character. I laughed out loud at the swimming pool scene on the front endpages with Julian swimming below his Abuela and the other ladies.
The setting is recognizably New York as they walk to the subway, ride the subway, exit the subway, and walk to their apartment. Wordless double spread pages take us with Julian as he imagines becoming and being a mermaid and there ...more

Absolutely GORGEOUS art. I can't wait to see what Love creates next!!
The story was very sweet, but I did wish there were more words. I'm not a big fan of the nearly wordless picture book.
Also, Abuela is much kinder than me! I would have been really upset if my grandson destroyed my houseplant and curtains to make himself a costume! ...more

Great story, gorgeous illustrations.
I wish there was a bit more text, simply because I'm doing a mermaid-themed storytime today and so much of the action in this book is shown through the pictures instead of told in words (which really, REALLY works for this book, but it *doesn't* work for my storytime needs. Hmmph!) ...more
