I may be the only person in the world who hasn't actually seen the movie of The Shining, so the only preconceptions I had were things I've seen in clips. Which all turned out to not be in the book at all! I think that was a good thing.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I felt like the supernatural stuff was pretty superfluous. You could basically tell the same story. Jack is an alcoholic and falls prey to an addiction. Without the hotel going after him he was still abusive. I mean I get the O ...more

I was disappointed with this one. I've never read the book, and never seen the movie. I'm familiar with the cultural references from the movie adaptation, so I was excited to read this. After finishing the book, I started watching the movie. There were so many changes to the original story, but Kubrick is Kubrick. The book provides a lot more of the history of the Overlook Hotel, which I didn't really miss in the movie. Good storytelling, overall, but a lower rating compared to other SK novels.

An excellent horror story and a deep psychological exploration of the damage of alcoholism and dysfunction. After I finished reading it, I did a little research and I wasn't surprised to find an interview where Kind admitted he wrote it as a way to deal with his own struggle against hurting his children when he was drunk (for the record, he never abused his kids.) This books messed up my dreams and I was happy to be done with it, but I am really glad I read it.

It did not scare me. It did not thrill me. It was suspenseful and a page turner but I really did not like it. It completely turned me off to reading anything else by Stephen King.
