Sprawling epic that starts in Spain in the 1930s and ends in the 1990s in Chile, with stops in several other countries along the way. It is Victor's story, but it is also the story of politics and resistance, family and resiliency. I was woefully ignorant about the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, and the tragedies of that time set such a dismal stage for the rest of the century.
