3.5 stars. Not my favorite Allende novel ever.

It is the late 1930's during the Spanish Civil War. Roser is a pregnant widow who winds up fleeing the country with her dead husband's brother Victor. They are not in love, but marry in order to better their chances of getting out. The two are amongst a number of refugees sponsored by famed poet Pablo Neruda to migrate to Chile. Sprawling epic that starts in Spain in the 1930s and ends in the 1990s in Chile, with stops in several other countries along the way. It is Victor's story, but it is also the story of politics and resistance, family and resiliency. I was woefully ignorant about the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, and the tragedies of that time set such a dismal stage for the rest of the century.

Meh. I don’t think this is the introduction to Allende I was hoping for. I think I need to find a better book from her backlist.
