Just finished this beast. All 945 pages of it. I'm trying hard not to overstate my love for this book since I just finished it and I suppose its possible that some of the shine could rub off of this in the coming months. But for right now, Lonesome Dove is the best thing I've read all year and it might be my favorite book of all time.

This took a very long time (partly because I had to return the digital book to the library before I finished) but it was all well worth it. It was my first time reading a Western - give it till at least page 150 if it's a new style for you too.

Two former Texas Rangers, Woodrow Call and Augustus McRae, move a large herd of cattle from Texas to Montana. This is a western novel of epic proportions. I loved every minute of it...I dreamed about the characters and missed them terribly when I finished the book. Fortunately, McMurtry wrote some more about them!

About 50 pages from the end I realized that Lonesome Dove was a western version of the legend of the Fisher King. It was good story but nothing mind blowing. I have to admit that it did at least keep me entertained while waiting for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to arrive.
