Read this way back in the day. I remember loving the adventure of being on one's own, and how pokey the pine needles must have been that they were sleeping on! (A kid's mind focuses on strange things...)

This is one of the first books from my childhood that I've reread as an adult that didn't hold up. The girls, Alice especially, seemed to enjoy it, so there's that.

This is a very sweet family story of siblings looking out for one another. Great as an early chapter book and a read aloud, since the writing is simple.
