One of the things I find so brilliant about Ishiguro is his pacing and how he keeps the plot moving forward but in a deliberate way that creates tension. At the beginning I'm curious--what world have we been dropped into? What don't I know yet and what am I curious about? What assumptions have I made? I completely forgot how strange I found Ishiguro’s writing style to be, but yet there are some brilliant moments of prose that take my breath away.
“Children make promises all the time. They come to the window, they promise all kind of things. They promise to come back, they ask you not to let anyone else take you away. It happens all the time. 3.5 stars This was my second Ishiguro book and it can be summed up, again, as "not a gripping book and it took me a second to finish, but it gave me a lot to think about." Pacing remains an issue for me; the first ~200 pages were a bit trying until a Thing was finally revealed in the last third of the novel — this seems to be the author's writing style. As in the other novel, many things are not explained in detail which leaves me a bit dissatisfied. I'm starting to think that I'm not a fan of
