Refreshing YA Fantasy story.

DNF--I got about 75 pages into this and I was just like "yeah yeah I get it, these oppressed warrior women are going to rise up and destroy their patriarchal oppressors and reclaim their demon blood, and honestly good for them." And I had a bunch of holds come in that I was actively excited about, and I realized: oh yeah I don't have to finish this if I don't want to! Sounds fake but is true!!

That said I feel like I read enough to get the gist to recommend to teen readers looking for fantasy/dy

I will be 100% honest – I picked up this book solely based on that cover, and I have zero regrets. This is a hard-hitting and fiery young adult fantasy about overcoming the patriarchy.

I had high anticipation for The Gilded Ones, and as so often happens this unfortunately led to me being mildly disappointed in some ways - however, at its core, the intentions behind this book are important, and the world built within it is mesmerising.

Enjoyable, at least one twist I didn’t see coming, insightful, high interest. Would be great for hunger game-ish fans. About 90% through I started getting worried it was going to be a cliff hanger, but it wraps up nicely. Lots of room for a sequel/series, but still a satisfying ending.

A West African-inspired fantasy full of magic, demons, beasts, great friendships and romance is supposed to be Young Adult but there is a lot of violence, abuse, and even rape. That said, it is a well written female empowerment story which will take you on an escape from reality as you join this unique journey. Loved the way it all came together in the end.

I really enjoyed this book. I'm seeing it get a lot of comparisons to Children of Blood and Bone, but I liked this one even better. Countless strong women abound. ...more
