I'm not a dog-story fan, but just thinking about this book makes me need to cry. I remember (probably seventh grade) staying up all night one summer evening and reading it straight through. I've never forgotten the powerful plot. We have some hound dogs down our street that make me think of the two dogs in the story. And any time I see a raccoon, I can't help but think of this book...
