I have not read Sherlock Holmes since I was a teenager. I never knew he was such a coke addict.

Sherlock Holmes is so delightfully conceited, with a childlike bluntness and honesty that makes him impossible to dislike. It doesn't hurt that he has the chops to back up his conceit. I love the banter between Holmes and Watson, Holmes' odd combination of ennui and ready enthusiasm balanced by Watson more level (almost irritable) nature. ...more

(Finally found the right edition here on Goodreads.) (Arg, clicked on the wrong spot and lost my review. So, if this isn't fully smooth, it's cuz I'm rewriting...)

So a book written in the late 1800s is likely going to include some racism. This one did. Oh, and plenty of sexism, too.

I’m intrigued by Homes, as so many have been over the years. Not sure about Watson.

Not sure how I feel about changing scenes mid way.

In which Sherlock does a bunch of cocaine, Watson falls in love, and we get a whole bunch of problematic race stuff. Plus a super convoluted plot. Audiobook reading by Simon Vance is stellar though.

this book is full of the fail that comes from historical fiction written over a hundred years ago, and it made me a little squirmy. THAT BEING SAID, HELLO MARY MORSTAN, BE MINE FOREVER.
