Book two in the Bartimaeus trilogy.

The story picks up two years after Nathaniel's confrontation with Simon Lovelace. Now 14, he has a new master an important position at the Dept. of Internal Affairs. He is primarily concerned with the capture of the Resistance, commoners who are trying to start a rebellion against the powerful and corrupt magicians who rule the country. A bigger problem emerges when a series of violent attacks gets blamed on the Resistance. While investigating the real culprit,

An enjoyable follow up to The Amulet of Samarkand. This book should not be read without reading the other first. If you liked the first book, I think you'll like this one as well. The concept of magic wrought by manipulation of demons/djinni is cool and continued here with more information about how that all works in practice.

I love this book more than the Amulet of Samarkand. This one follows Kitty and her arc a little more closely and Bartimeaus is just as charming. It also has the best skeleton chase. It's a fun adventure and while I do love this series as previously stated, I do see some cracks on how magicians seem to operate. A good second book

Set a couple years later, Bartemaeus is still the best character. The world is still fascinating and I loved the magic. The mystery in this one was good.

Well-written and entertaining, this is the second in a trilogy. I actually only read it because I couldn't get it on CD; I had listened to the first one, which is read superbly by Simon Jones (of the BBC "Hitchhiker's Guide"). I wasn't sure how it would hold up to being read, rather than listened to, but I greatly enjoyed it. ...more

I can't figure this one. 3.5 stars, maybe. It's engaging, but took forever to read.

I enjoy the series despite mostly despising all the characters. Even the ones I think I'm supposed to admire. Tricky!
