George R.R. Martin is one of the giants in the fantasy world today, and rightly so. He is a master of storytelling, world building and his characters command so much attention it's difficult to put them aside in favor of doing things like, you know, eating, sleeping and working.

I tend to avoid fantasy novels, because the majority of the tropes they lean on aggravate me. Game of Thrones falls back on many of these (noble savagery, faux-medieval language substitutions like "raper" for rapist, "ser" for sir and "gaol" for jail, names that are obnoxiously 'fantasized' either through spelling or the addition of extraneous apostrophes), but I still very much enjoyed my experience. Very good story line. I watched the first 3 or so episodes of the series before starting the book and that probably helped me to keep the characters easily seperated in my mind. There were definitely some slow parts though that led me to set the book down easily and not look forward to picking it back up. Because of that I give this book 3.5 stars.

It's not even that I didn't like this. I wasn't expecting to, and I found it immensely readable and pretty interesting. But it's just too long to keep holding my interest. If you do have a block of time, though, I recommend it. I just let too much time pass when I didn't read it, and now I can't be bothered.
