OMG I read this book over and over again as a teenager. Why did I have to own the version with the cheesiest cover?
Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairy tales. I love the Disney iteration, the smart, bookish, kind but spunky Belle. But I'm usually pretty generous in liking any retelling of Beauty and the Beast. The classic story elements shine through in any version. I really, really enjoyed this re-telling of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley. It was tame enough to be enjoyed by young girls, but contained enough substance that I, as an adult, could also really enjoy it.

Continuing my renewed love affair with Robin McKinley, I re-read this, her first novel. It is quite good, but lacks some the extra oomph of her later books. Still, it is a good re-telling of Beauty and the Beast, where Beauty is an actual individual, stubborn woman with ideas and plans of her own.
I absolutely love this book. I want that library so bad. And I loved the characters and how they grew.
