I was at high school when I read this book, and it became one of the books I remembered for years.

Unfortunately with the ratings for this book I was expecting it to be much more than it was. And, unfortunately, I have read a few books so similar to this it was far too predictable for me. Now, I am sure the other books I have read are much newer, so if I had read this book sooner I may have given it 5 stars as it probably deserves, but it just didn't stand out for me.

A timid young girl marries a widower and moves to his Cornish estate. The house and grim servants are filled with memories of the first wife, Rebecca. The terror and doom grow until all is resolved. This title, along with Jane Eyre and Mistress of Mellyn is one of the three greatest gothic romances ever written. They are forever melded into one story in my mind and my dreams.

This book is sinister and romantic all at once, and I could read it a thousand times and never get tired of it. You become so attached to the nameless heroine, you are pulled so deeply into the ghost story and then! just like that, the ending catches up with you, unexpectedly.
