I was actually surprised at how much better this book was than what I expected. Sookie is an interesting character, southern fried barmaid who, despite herself, her friends and her upbringings, has some really interesting feminist characteristics.
Although she's also the most obvious Mary Sue of all time.
Still, Harris sets up an extremely interesting town, which I enjoy on TV, It's nice seeing them in another format as well. I'll definitely return to this series. A nice, easy read to chew on. ...more

Just not my cup of tea. I was pretty fascinated by the HBO series, and I think that's where the mistake came in. It's really hard getting into a book series when you have the actors already pictured, and have grown an attachment to characters that don't even exist in the book.
The mystery wasn't a mystery - since I knew who had done the murders and .. I just can't get into the series at all. Not a big loss, I'm sure. ...more

what a great "fluff" series! I couldn't put it down, a great mix of romance and fantasy... but I kinda wish I would have read this before seeing "true blood".. I can't wait to read the next one, though!

Dead until dark - oh how I wish I had it for a recent airplane flight. Total quick read/ page turner, I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

This was a pretty decent quick read. I think I would have liked it better if I hadn't seen the HBO show based on it (True Blood), because the first season mirrors this first book in the series, with some notable differences. Some of the tension I saw in the show didn't come off in the writing and I found that a bit disappointing. I'm still going to read the other books in the series and I'm interested in where the characters are going, plus I'm a little excited that there isn't a second season o

Probably should have read this before watching the show. I enjoy Trueblood, but don't love it, and still havent seen any of the second season although it is already done. Some of the characters in the show are not in the book, and I missed them. The book focuses far more on Sookie than the show, allowing for a lot less of a look into the other characters.

Chicklit with a vampire twist...not a terrible book, but not the best I've ever read (love the Twilight series for vampire stories). I'll probably read the rest in this series, because some intriguing groundwork was laid at the end of this volume.
