I had a hard time with the beginning of Shades of Grey. The universe Fforde has created is so unusual, it took a lot of time to explain, and the first half of the book feels slow. Having read other Fforde books, I had high expectations. I slogged through, and by the half-way point the setup starts paying off. I had looked forward to this book as I really enjoyed Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series, but I really struggled to get into this book. The concept is about a caste society made up by the colors you are able to see. It was an interesting concept, and there were parts I enjoyed, but it may have been one that was just too complex for me to follow while listening on audio.
