Great YA book about vampires, demons, werewolves... but the heroine certainly doesn't fall in love with any of them simply because he sparkles. The writing isn't the greatest here (the dialogue is pretty crummy at times), but it's written in an engaging manner and the story is a great one.

from the NPR poll of best Young Adult fiction - I heard a lot about this series, and decided to find out if it's really That Good.

This is seriously sooooo fluffy and silly, but yet trying to be Very Serious - it is the ultimate fantasy: teen girl suddenly discovers she has Speshul Powers and is not ordinary, she's a star! people are impressed by her! she can do things she never dreamed of, with no effort! there is magic in the world and she never knew! And hey! she thought she was homely, but s ...more

I enjoyed this book for what it was. Plot twist were easy to spot quickly, which left cynical me mock shocked when familial relationships were revealed (honestly who didn't know who Clary's father was?) I do think Clare made a big mistake in the plot "shocker" that was Jace and Clary's relationship. I just think that was a big mistake in a Teen book. If I didn't know how the relationship end ultimately (thank you online spoilers) I would not be interested in reading the rest of the series.

I'm so disappointed. I rather enjoyed the Infernal Devices books but I just couldn't get into City of Bones. For one, the characters between the two series are entirely too similar except I couldn't really get into the story around Clary and her crew.

I made the mistake of reading some of the reviews before reading this book - which meant that I kept putting reading this off. Don't make that same mistake.
I know very little about the author, and frankly don't care to go find out about her all that much. This book is a fun, exciting read and Cassandra Clare created an interesting and unique world. I was fascinated by the runes, the silent men and the darkness of the creatures surrounding Clary.

Ugh. This book really was going to be a 5, but there was twist at the end that totally ruined it for me. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to read the 2nd or 3rd in the series. Really a big bummer. The storyline is really good, but the romance angle got messed up majorly for me.

I found this book to be extremely well written for one in the young adult genre. The ending surprised me, which doesn't happen frequently. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series!
