Lyra is a gifted young girl who is destined to save mankind. But she must do it without knowing that it is her mission. As part of her fate, she must rescue some young children who have been kidnapped and taken to the Arctic by a religious group known as The Gobblers. The group is doing Dust experimentations on the children.

I recall picking this book up in the library soon after it came out, taking it home, looking at it, and then returning it. I loved Pullman's Sally Lockhart trilogy, but somehow this book didn't seem good. People have told me lately that I really should read it, so I did, and while I appreciate it because Pullman is an excellent writer and creator of worlds, it really didn't hold my attention plot-wise. Maybe if I weren't too lazy to read the next two books? But somehow I just don't see that happ

I really enjoyed this book! it's along the lines of Alice in Wonderland, a great children's/young adult novel but also can be read by adults with a more subtle meaning. I didn't think there was a lot of "anti-church" sentiment, at least not enough to overwhelm the story. I can't wait to read the next one!
